What is lipedema?
Lipedema is a disease that affects 1 in 10 women, caused by the proliferation and inflammation of fat cells in the hips and thighs, resulting in limbs being disproportionate to the rest of the body. It affects almost exclusively women and is classified into three degrees:
- Grade I: The surface of the skin is regular and soft, although nodules of fat can be seen.
- Grade II: The surface of the skin is irregular and hard.
- Grade III: The surface of the skin is fatty, especially on the hips and ankles, where fat nodules of different sizes abound. La superficie de la piel es adiposa, sobre todo en caderas y tobillos, donde abundan nódulos de grasa de distinto tamaño.
What is the origin of lipedema?
Usually, lipedema is caused by significant weight gain, although sometimes it can also be caused by hormonal disorders such as hypothyroidism, type II diabetes, polycystic ovaries…

Are you the ideal candidate?
For the diagnosis of lipedema and confirmation of the disease, a medical consultation with a specialist is necessary.
Ask for an appointment without commitment with Dra. Brasó and she will accompany you in the diagnosis process and guideline of the best treatment for you.
The intervention
The intervention for the treatment of lipedema is a complex surgery that requires a high specialization, but it is much less invasive with the tissues than traditional liposuction and at the same time it allows excellent results: extraction of up to 2.5 liters of fat per session.
Postoperative
Usually, the patient must spend a night in the hospital and is discharged the day after the intervention.
Back to normal
You will be able to return to your routine the day after the intervention, although during the following weeks you may feel tired. If your physical condition prior to surgery is good, recovery will be faster.
The results
WAL liposuction provides excellent results immediately, although the final result will be seen after about six months. In most cases the results are definitive, as long as you accompany it with a balanced diet and regular exercise. The scars will not be visible, even when wearing a bikini.
Sessions
In some cases, the treatment of lipedema can be carried out in a single session, but in others, 2 or 3 sessions may be necessary to achieve an optimal result.
Our guarantee
Although WAL liposuction is a less invasive treatment than traditional liposuction, there is always some small risk of complications. To minimize them, it is essential that you carefully follow the instructions of our plastic surgeons, both before and after treatment.
